Introducing

Beginner Guitar Survival Course

So you're interested in learning guitar as part of a group?

Well, I want to make sure you're comfortable on every step of your journey, so this is where the Beginner Guitar Survival Course comes in.

This course was made specifically with older adult beginner guitar players in mind to help them tackle this instrument in the most effective way possible.

I also know from experience teaching older adults that learning information gets a little harder as time goes on.

Hence, the course combines:

  • Ten 1 hour group sessions where you learn alongside people just like you
  • 12 months access to a fully comprehensive video curriculum so you can learn at your own pace
  • A beautifully crafted student workbook to reinforce and retain your knowledge
  • Small WhatsApp group with the other 5 successful applicants so you can report those all important wins!

Who's teaching this?

I'm Aaron Carrington.

I've been playing guitar for 25 years and teaching it for 16 (that went quickly!). Many of my students over the years have been adults - some in their 50s, 60s, 70's and even beyond that.

I graduated with a BMus (Hons) from the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP) in London in 2014, and then, in various teaching positions, spent years in front of hundreds of students, working through the kind of problems you're probably facing right now.

On the gigging side: I've been playing professionally for over two decades. Wedding bands, corporate events, high-profile clients including the Prince's Trust, the RAF, and the BBC. In 2022 I spent nine months in Dubai and Bahrain playing six nights a week in residency bands alongside some genuinely world-class musicians.

For the past three years I've been running Carrington Guitar Academy in Bath. My one-to-one calendar is full and has been for some time but I've always believed that the right small group - six people, same level, same goals - can be just as powerful as a private lesson, maybe even more so.

I genuinely love teaching this stuff - and I want to help you build the best possible foundation.

What the course covers

Here's an idea of some of the things we'll be working through together.

Playing single-note melodies cleanly - understanding what causes buzzing and muffling and how to fix it

Chord changes - the techniques that make switching between chords smoother and more reliable

Strumming with proper technique - building rhythm that sounds musical rather than mechanical

Playing in time - how to use a metronome properly and develop timing you can trust

Reading guitar tab - so you can pick up any song and know exactly what to do with it

Basic music theory - just enough to help you learn the notes of the neck and stop you feeling lost when looking at Guitar TAB

Warming up properly - protecting your hands and avoiding strain injuries

Building a practice routine - so every session moves you forward with purpose

I'll be straight with you. This course is new, and I'm looking for a small group of students to go through it with me properly - to test the material, tell me what's working, and help me refine it into the best version it can be. In exchange for that, you get in at a significantly reduced price, and your feedback genuinely shapes the course.

There are 6 spots in this cohort - that's the maximum size of a small group lesson, and I won't be adding more students once they're filled.

Questions people usually ask

Absolutely not. Most of my students over the years have been adults in their 50s, 60s and 70s. Adults actually learn differently to children - they're more patient, more motivated, and more consistent. Age is genuinely not a barrier here. If anything, it's an advantage.

Not at all - this is designed with complete beginners in mind. If you've never touched a guitar, you're in the right place. We start from the very beginning and nothing is assumed.

Probably not, honestly. Most people who are self-taught have gaps - things they've glossed over accidentally. The Beginner Guitar Survival Course is here to help you build on what you already know and fill in the bits you've been missing.

You can, and there's genuinely good free content out there. The difference here is structure, feedback, accountability, and a teacher who can actually respond to you specifically. If you've tried the self-directed route and found it hard to stay on track or make real progress, this is designed to solve exactly that.

No, the video course is supplementary so you can work through at your own pace, but its paired with ten weeks of in-person, one-hour group lessons with me and a student workbook to reinforce knowledge. You're not just watching videos. You're showing up to real lessons, in the room, with your guitar.

If you miss one or two, that's OK, you'll still progress well and whatever you miss can be supplemented with the online video curriculum in your own time. Just bare in mind that to maximise learning and feedback, higher attendance is preferable.

Just your guitar (electric or acoustic is fine) and a genuine desire to learn. You don't need any prior musical knowledge or any particular equipment. A notepad and pen is optional if that's your thing, but don't worry if not - your student workbook is designed to take the work out of note taking.

Because this is the founding cohort. You're helping me test and refine the course, and your feedback will genuinely be used to improve it. That's worth something to me, so I'm pricing it accordingly. This price is for early cohorts only. It goes up once the course is established.

One-off payment. Once paid, you instantly get twelve months access to the video course, plus a confirmed slot in the ten-week, in-person group cohort. Your student workbook will be sent to you or if you prefer, you can pick it up on your first group lesson day. No subscriptions, no hidden fees.

1 hour group lessons take place on Wednesday afternoons at 1:15pm. Lessons commence mid-May at New Oriel Hall in Larkhall, Bath.

My promise to you

If after your first group session you feel the course isn't right for you, get in touch and we'll make it right. I want every student in this group to feel like they made a great decision - and I'm confident you will.

A quick note on expectations

This course will give you everything you need - the structure, the knowledge, the technique, and a teacher who's genuinely invested in your progress. But no course can do the practicing for you.

Guitar is a physical skill. It takes repetition, patience, and showing up regularly - even when it's just 15 minutes before dinner. The students who get the most out of guitar lessons are the ones who commit to practicing in-between.

If you're willing to put in that time, the progress is absolutely yours for the taking. I've seen it hundreds of times. It's not a matter of talent - it's a matter of showing up consistently.

Ready to start learning guitar properly?

Ten weeks from now, you could have a solid foundation - the fundamental building blocks of clean melody playing, tighter chord changes, smoother strumming and real confidence when you pick up the guitar.

This is a small, focused group, meeting in person in Bath - the kind of learning environment where you get the attention you need and your questions answered so that you can make real progress. If that sounds like what you're looking for, I'd love to have you in the group!
